I have a handful of dear friends and they know I've been sexless for (drumroll, please) 20 years. I remember the last person. But here's the thing. For me, it's not intentional. It's not for spiritual purposes or because I don't like sex. It's just that I have never had meaningless sex. I prefer to be in a happy, healthy relationship before doing the do.

Never in a million years did I think this would be my life, but I'm not miserable, I don't think about it constantly. What's particularly turned me off is the casualty of sex today. When everyone is giving it away without a care, I come across as being difficult when I expect the basics. I've found men to be absolutely lazy about dating and it's not a turn-on.

For instance, a guy I met texted me a few days later and we hit it off. Good sense of humor, all that. But here's the thing. He randomly texted me asking me for a date, today, on the spot. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but I've never once gotten hot and bothered or excited over a last minute date text. Call me. I'd rather a warm voice asking me for a date. Not a lazy-ass text. I didn't even bother to reply.

I also don't appreciate men leading with sexuality. It's nice to hear I'm pretty/attractive and all, but when that's all the focus, I'm quickly bored.

I could definitely go on, but I'll leave with this. I may be butchering the saying but it's been said that the state of women shapes communities. In other words, if the majority of women are accepting low standards, men don't rise up. They don't need to because the garbage they're putting down is being accepted. When more women expect better, they only have one choice; to shape up. So when these men come across me, expecting thoughtful conversation or an open car door, I look bougie or difficult. They don't have to do better. Just get someone easier.

So I'm not lonely and I'm not sad, and I'm open to love and a good mattress workout. But not with the wrong person. Not just for recreation or a temporary itch.

Sidebar: It pisses me off when men don't believe me and it becomes the whole topic of all conversations. I don't start off with it, but when it comes time for the exchange of questions, men look at me like a sad unicorn. They either don't believe, are mesmerized or wonder what's wrong with me.

Ooh, being in between jobs can be such a blow to one's self-esteem. I resonated with that a lot.
